Power utility urges consumers to track usage through the Mor Bijli App, saying real-time monitoring can help reduce electricity expenses and improve energy efficiency.
Raipur, July 16: Amid growing public concerns over electricity bills following the installation of smart meters, the Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited (CSPDCL) has clarified that smart meters are not responsible for higher electricity bills. According to the state utility, the technology simply measures actual power consumption with greater accuracy and transparency.
The company said that in cases where consumers have noticed an increase in their monthly bills, the primary reason has been higher electricity usage, which pushes consumption into higher tariff slabs. Officials maintained that smart meters neither alter tariff rates nor generate additional charges.
Real-Time Data Gives Consumers Greater Control
CSPDCL said smart metering enables consumers to monitor electricity consumption throughout the month instead of waiting for the monthly bill. Through the Mor Bijli App, users can access updated consumption data every 30 minutes, making it easier to identify energy-intensive appliances and adjust usage patterns before bills escalate.
Transparent Billing System
The utility explained that conventional metering systems only informed consumers about total consumption after the billing cycle ended. Smart meters, on the other hand, provide continuous visibility into electricity usage, allowing households to make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary consumption.
Summer Demand Pushed Consumption Higher
According to the distribution company, electricity demand increased significantly during April, May and June due to prolonged heat conditions across the state. Increased use of air conditioners, coolers and other electrical appliances resulted in higher household consumption, which naturally reflected in electricity bills.
Supporting Consumers Through Digital Services
CSPDCL said the smart metering system also helps consumers manage monthly consumption more effectively, particularly those seeking to remain within consumption limits to continue receiving benefits under state electricity subsidy schemes. The company encouraged consumers to use digital tools regularly to understand their usage patterns and adopt energy-efficient practices.
The utility further stated that complaints received regarding smart meters have been examined, and in most cases the meters were found to be functioning correctly. Consumers with any billing or metering concerns have been advised to contact the company’s 1912 customer support helpline for assistance.
Along with promoting responsible electricity consumption, CSPDCL has also encouraged eligible households to consider installing rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which can significantly reduce long-term electricity expenses.
